Abstract:

Studying Biodiversity is an important tool to understand the intrinsic functions of all species on the earth. The present work was carried out to collect data regarding faunal diversity of Bay of Bengal emphasizing to the coastal stretch of Vizag. The city lies between 17º44’N latitude, and 83º23’E. According to IUCN a considerable number of available fish species of the coastal Bay of Bengal are in a state of danger in near future due to indiscriminate fishing, habitat degradation, pollution etc. Fishes constitute almost half of the total number of vertebrates in the world and important marine resource and considering its contribution to the overall economy of India, immediate intervention is required. Therefore conservation, aimed towards preserving existing biodiversity to maintain ecological balance is required, although the pressure on natural habitats associated with increasing population and economic growth will continue to lead to the loss of biological diversity.
